SEC assigns EMC to take care of email storage

The Security and Exchange Commission in the United States has chosen EMC and its Legato software to manage its ever increasing flow of emails in lesser expensive secondary storage spaces and improve search and retrieval processes too.

EMC's Centera content-addressable storage system and Legato's EmailXtender and Disk Xtender software will be used to automatically move emails off the agency's Exchange servers and onto the Centera Compliance Edition storage array.

All of the outgoing and incoming mail will be captured and indexed by this system.

The Centera stores these messages until they are no longer needed, or until government requirements consider them unnecessary.

The irony is that EMC designed this system to help financial organisations comply with SEC mandates for preserving and indexing electronic records.

Howard Elias, EMC's Executive vice president of corporate marketing and office of technology, said. "As evidenced by our work with the SEC, the combined value of EMC and our Legato software division has never been more pronounced. The EMC/Legato solution will substantially improve the SEC's ability to manage and access its email databases and, to that extent, enable the SEC to perform its mission more efficiently."

The main aim of the U.S. SEC is to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities market. More and more people are becoming first-time investors and look to the market to secure their future, pay for homes, and send children to college.

A more sophisticated email manage system will them respond to security needs much more quickly and efficiently.

The EMC Centera is the first ever content addressed system (CAS) to meet the requirements of "fixed content", such as email or other unchanging digital assets retained for reference purposes or long-term use. The device is a magnetic disk-based, WORM (wrote once, read many) system designed to comply with regulatory requirements, because the data cannot be overwritten.

Legato EmailXtender is a centralised data storage and retrieval system that automatically collects, organises, retains and retrieves email messages and attachments. It supports Microsoft Exchange/Outlook, Lotus Notes/Domino, UNIX Sendmail and Bloomberg Mail.
