ISYS Makes PDFs Presentable

February 15, 2006: ISYS Search Software has been selected by the Office of the Queensland Parliamentary Counsel to handle the search and retrieval of legislation information from its public website.

There counsel has six distinct collections of PDFs comprising of over 21,000 documents that are to be made publicly available. The counsel settled on ISYS:web 7 to handle this due to its scalability, rapid viewing of large files and PDF search capabilities.

“We required a search engine that could serve as the technology centrepiece of our site,” says Simon Bourne, acting IT manager for the Office of the Queensland Parliamentary Counsel. “For research purposes, we needed the ability to search and locate phrases with a particular meaning in legislation, while not finding other instances of these terms outside of that context. This meant searching every word, and with more than 21,000 documents comprising 250 million words, we knew this solution needed to be highly scalable and accurate.”

Featuring a relevance algorithm and on-the-fly categorisation, ISYS:web 7 is able to search and sort large volumes of text inside PDFs. It also includes an outline view to display text versions of the PDF with key terms highlighted, hit highlighting to take users directly to the relevant part of the document and linguistic handling to help deal with spelling and grammar errors.
