2006 Secrets Of Australian ICT Innovation Competition

August 16th, 2006: The 2006 Secrets of Australian IT Innovation Competition (Secrets), worth $105,000, is the fifth annual competition to be held. It is a major showcase of Australia's ICT innovation to a global audience.

The 2006 Secrets of Australian ICT Innovation Competition will again select world leading innovative Australian ICT companies and research organisations and provide support to present their innovative technologies to a global audience.

The winners will also be profiled in promotional material that will target overseas markets and investors and in the promotion of Australia as an innovative nation. The competition is aimed at Australian based companies, research organisations, universities and individuals undertaking ground breaking ICT research and development. Cisco Systems and Dell Australia are major sponsors of the competition with assistance also provided by State and Territory Governments.

Applications are invited in seven categories. Each category will have up to three prize winners, who will receive financial assistance to participate in showcasing events in Australia and overseas or computer hardware. Prizes are valued at: 1st Prize - $7,000 2nd Prize - $5,000 3rd Prize - $3,000 Note: the value of hardware prize is limited.

The categories included this year are:
1. Business/Industrial (Software) Solutions
Innovative software products or services that enhance business operations through better internal processes. This includes (but is not limited to) environmental applications, industrial applications such as mine site software, intelligent transport systems (ITS), process control and sensing applications, air control, weather forecasting, irrigation and farm applications.

2. Commerce
Innovative products or services based on application of technology to enhance the ability of businesses to trade with other businesses or the general community eg business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumers (B2C), Government-to-Community (G2C).

3. Communication Applications
Innovative products or services associated with communication technologies, including VOIP, Wireless Technologies, SMS etc.

4. Entertainment
Innovative products or services applying multiple or mixed media (text, sound, visuals etc) for a new game, media or entertainment solution.

5. Health
Innovative products or services related to the health industry. They could be related to health care administration, health applications, solutions or research.

6. Learning
Innovative products or services where individuals or groups are able to obtain new knowledge and skills using computer network technologies. The technologies may provide not only text, but also sounds, video simulations, and collaboration with other learners. Delivery could be via web, mobile handheld devices, cell phones and displays embedded in everyday objects and appliances.

7. Security
Innovative products and services associated with the security of data and systems, the protection of confidential information and secure authentication of commercial data communications.

In 2005, despite a reduced timeframe to conduct the Secrets competition, 117 companies took the time and effort to prepare and submit applications in one of 7 categories. The number of applications was down on previous years, however the quality of the applications, as determined by the judging panel, had improved markedly.

Secrets of Australian IT Innovation Competition is an initiative of the Committee Marketing ICT of Australia, a committee made up of representatives of state / territory governments, Austrade, Invest Australia, Department of Communications, IT and the Arts (DCITA), industry associations and research bodies.
