NetApp backs SNia Solid State Storage Initiative

September 30, 2008: The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced the new Solid State Storage Initiative (SSSI) with NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) as a founding member.

Val Bercovici, Office of the CTO, NetApp, was also elected as the inaugural vice-chair of the SSSI's Governing Board.

As a collective initiative of industry leaders committed to becoming the recognised authority for storage made from nonvolatile, solid state memory devices, the SSSI will coordinate and conduct education efforts for the vendor and user communities, perform market outreach highlighting the virtues of solid state storage, and further the development of standards specific to the technology.

In addition, the SSSI will collaborate with other organisations and initiatives to further the dialogue on solid state storage as well as leverage the SNIA International organisation to promote solid state storage on a global scale.

Solid state disks (SSDs) are beginning to reshape the storage industry thanks to the advent of NAND Flash memory, which provides persistent storage at greater density and lower cost than other currently available memory technologies. The NetApp®Performance Accelerator Module represents another innovative approach to accelerating storage system performance with solid state technology in a caching configuration. Both approaches provide a means of reducing latency and achieving high levels of I/O operations, in addition to improved density and lower environmental costs.
