Australian Innovators Come Up Trumps at ICT Awards

February 20, 2006: The Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) has acknowledged two Australian information and communications (ICT) developers as world leaders.

Retail intelligence specialist Beonic and CSIRO Entomology and Hearne Scientific Software were both honoured at the ceremony in Chiangmai, Thailand on Sunday night. Boenic was announced as the winner of the Applications and Infrastructure Tools category for its Traffic Insight system, while CSIRO Entomology won a merit award in the General Applications category for its Dymex-Climex model-building tool.

Beonic’s Traffic Insight system helps retailers improve sales by providing visitor traffic information obtained through a combination of sensing equipment and analytic software.

"We expect this win will raise the profile of how Beonic is assisting leading Australian retailers to understand better what their customers want," says Peter Cohen, Beonic CEO.

CSIRO Entomology Dymex-Climex software on the other hand, is a “very complex research tool developed by scientists for scientists," according to Dr Mark Lonsdale, Deputy Chief of CSIRO Entomology. It has been designed to help protect Australia's agriculture and natural environments by increasing the CSIRO’s ability to assess biosecurity risks and protect Australia from threats such as diseases, insects and other invasive pests.

"The partnership between Hearne and CSIRO has turned it into a much more user-friendly and well-supported application that is getting much wider use. It's great to see it recognised by the iAwards and APICTA schemes."

The iAwards, like the APICTA, is the Australian Information Industry Association’s (AIIA) annual program for recognising Australia’s leading ICT innovators. iAward winners are immediately eligible to attend the APICTA.
