Open Document Support For Microsoft Office Coming

May 7th, 2006: The OpenDocument foundation has announced that it has developed a plug-in for Microsoft Office that will add full OpenDocument support to Microsoft’s office suite.

Microsoft has previously refused to offer compatibility support for the open source document format, leaving organisations wishing to move away from Microsoft Office’s proprietary file formats somewhat stranded.

The plug-in was donated to the OpenDocument foundation by the open source community and is not currently publicly available.

The foundation is reportedly been in touch with Google about offering the plug-in as part of a Google Pack software bundle, however nothing has been confirmed.

Organisations keenly watching the OpenDocument Format (ODF) develop "haven't seen a way of ever moving to OpenDocuments," Gary Edwards, co-founder and president of the foundation told InformationWeek. "The plug-in is meant for people who haven't been able to make the leap."
