Extending HSM archiving

Two new DiskXtender applications have been released by storage software vendor Legato.

DiskXtender 2000 version 5.4 and version 2.6 for UNIX and Linux went onto the market this week and are aimed at businesses looking for an application that will automatically move inactive and fixed content to alternative storage systems like tape or a storage area network (SAN), rather than taking up space on the online storage systems.

Both applications are configured to move content to ATA disk drives; SAN attached arrays, tape, or optical storage systems.

Joining the 'cost-per-megabyte' debate in the storage arena Legato claims the new applications will enable a business to shave a fifth off their backup operation times.

Version 5.4 of DiskXtender 2000 in integrated to work with EMC's Centera network storage system and supports Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, as well as SDLT tape drives and libraries from Quantum and Compaq. A range of DVD libraries are also supported by the application.

DiskXtender version 2.6 for UNIX and Linux also supports the Centera range, as well as IBM's AIX, Sun Solaris, Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX, Tru64 from Hewlett Packard (HP), IRIX from Silicon Graphics and Red Hat Linux operating systems.

Legato has also integrated version 2.6 with its own NetWorker application for use on the Solaris platform, which will offer automated hierarchical storage management.
