RWC website promises feast for rugby fans

With the kick-off of the 2003 Rugby World Cup (RWC) just nine days away, and the excitement and anticipation reaching fever pitch among rugby fans here in the host nation Australia and across the world, the IRB (International Rugby Board), together with partners Telstra, Unisys and Microsoft, announced the launch of the official RWC website.

The website (www.rugbyworldcup.com) is the biggest tournament website ever created by RWC, and is available in three languages – English, French and Spanish.

It contains a multitude of features and useful information for rugby fans all over the world, including daily tournament news, results, comprehensive statistics from current and previous tournaments, and visitor information on the various destinations across the country where matches will take place.

All of the above is available free of charge, while for a one-off fee of US$25 (AUD$36.60), users can get full access the multimedia part of the site, which features live audio commentary of all the matches, half-time and full-time video highlights, and full match replays (available 24 hours after the game takes place), as well as video previews of every match, interviews with coaches and captains after every game, and video clips of memorable moments from previous tournaments.

For all those attending matches featuring the lesser lights of world rugby, such as Georgia and Uruguay, the site also features a handy list of team songs for each competing nation, so you can sing along with the natives of your "adopted" team as well as your country of origin.

Thanks to Telstra's involvement in the RWC website, the communication giant's BigPond internet subscribers will get free access to the multimedia section of the site, with any downloads not added to the customers' monthy usage allowance.

Mike Miller, RWC Managing Director, took time at the launch to praise those involved in the creation and running of the website.

"We have shown our commitment to spreading the global visibility of rugby by providing our most extensive online tournament service ever. We couldn't have achieved this without the expertise of Unisys, Telstra and Microsoft, who have worked together to make this a product of which we can all be proud."
