Oracle cosies up to PeopleSoft customers

Oracle has made another attempt to convince PeopleSoft customers that they won't be left high and dry in the event of an Oracle takeover by means of an online "town hall" meeting.

Oracle executives Mike Rocha and Chuck Philips were on hand to answer questions from PeopleSoft customers, most of which involved giving reassurances that PeopleSoft applications would be maintained and that PeopleSoft customers would receive continued support.

The webcast signalled the resumption of the power struggle, after a bit of a lull in the last couple of weeks. The annual PeopleSoft Connect customer conference is just two weeks away, OracleWorld starts next week in San Francisco, while the Oracle Applications Users Group will be held a week later. Takeover talk is likely to dominate all these events.

Meanwhile, PeopleSoft CEO Craig Conway put Oracle matters aside when addressing an analysts meeting in New York yesterday, instead preferring to dwell on the positive outlook for PeopleSoft following the completion of the J.D. Edwards acquisition.

The company raised its estimated licensing revenue for 2004 from its initial estimate of just over US$400 million to between $485 and $515 million, due to what Conway described as the "clear, present and immediate benefit" of the merger.
